How to Protect Smart Bidding From Spam Conversions in Google Ads

Recently, a lead-gen agency that mostly works with home builders shared this with one of our salespeople: a bot finds one search term overnight, and by morning a community has around 50 new conversions:

“All of a sudden a community will have 50 conversions on that and it’ll just be, you know, it’s spam is what it is, where some bot has ran through and is using that to convert.”

Most PPC managers watch for drops: conversions fall, cost per acquisition climbs, and you take notice. But a spike doesn’t trigger the same alarm. It looks like good news, which might hide a big problem.


Why a spike is more dangerous than a drop

A drop announces itself. But a spike doesn’t, because nothing about it looks wrong. Smart Bidding has no built-in way to tell a real form fill from a bot filling out the same form fifty times before breakfast, a pattern others have documented as form spam poisoning the bidding signal. Every one of those fifty gets counted, and the algorithm reads all of them as demand.

So the account doesn’t fail quietly. It succeeds loudly, on the wrong signal, and by the time cost per lead looks off, Smart Bidding has already had days to bid up that pattern. Catching the spike before the algorithm learns from it is the whole game.

Here’s how to catch the spike early, trace it to the source, and stop it from affecting future bidding decisions.


Step 1: Set an alert for increases, not just decreases.

Most monitoring is tuned to catch things getting worse, which is the wrong bar here. Optmyzr’s default Anomaly Alerts run automatically on every connected account, but they watch cost, impressions, and clicks, but not conversions. And this exact spike would sail right past them.

Step 3: Trace it to the exact search term.

Step 4: Confirm it’s spam before you touch anything.

No tool will tell you if a conversion is fake. That call is yours. Does the term make sense, and would 50 people possibly search it overnight in one community? Some of the tells here would be: nonsensical phrasing, a location mismatch, or a pattern that looks scripted rather than something that comes from a human. Don’t get this step wrong or else you could negate a real, high-intent term, which does more damage than the spam did.


Step 5: Negate it, then decide if it’s a pattern.

What negating the term doesn’t undo.

Here’s the honest part: negating the term stops the bleeding, but it doesn’t erase what Smart Bidding already learned from the conversions it already counted. There’s no button that un-counts those fifty leads once Google has logged them, not in Optmyzr, not anywhere we could confirm.
